They're pretty tough. I've left mine on the counter for several days in a row more than once, and while it wasn't an instant recovery, they all (I have a few) perked up within couple feedings... Especially the whole grain ones. You could also cut back on how much you feed, putting your starter on a "diet" per say - I'll admit I don't always have the time or patience to measure properly and will just throw a big spoonful of flour and a splash of water in the jar, without discarding - which is definitely underfeeding! They certainly aren't coddled, that's for sure. My house is cooler, never over 68* F which probably helps significantly. Long story short - keep it covered so it doesn't dry out, and it'll be fine, especially if it's kept cool. :)
