Hi, Michelle! You're looking for a consistency that's similar to pancake batter. That being said, some bakers do prefer a dryer starter (often called a "stiff" starter) that's more of a pasty consistency, so don't worry too much that you've harmed your starter, as you haven't. For best results, just add a touch more water until it reaches the consistency you're looking for.
