That's great, Jeanie! A crusty top just means that your starter is drying out a little. If you've got your starter covered with something like fabric or paper, consider switching over to something like plastic or glass, but not airtight. (A loose lid or some plastic wrap draped over it should do the trick. If you have a lid with a latch, you can either leave it unlatched or remove the rubber seal that's designed to stop airflow.) You can either remove the crusty bits or stir them in, it's not harmful to your starter either way. Happy baking!
