My husband and I love sourdough and I have tried three times to start my own starter by using the recipe you provided. All I ever got was a foul-smelling glob of goo that had to be thrown away as neither one of us could stand the stench. What did I do wrong? Another question - you say to use a cup of whole wheat flour - 4 ounces - how can that be? Isn't a cup 8 ounces of flour? Is the flour sifted? If so, is it sifted above the measuring cup similar to the method used by instructors when demonstrating the way to sift flour for artisan bread?
