Hi there! This calls for powder because it's shelf-stable and easier for folks to keep on hand if they don't use buttermilk regularly. But if you have fresh buttermilk on hand and would like to use that instead, feel free to follow the instructions on the recipe page substitute 1 1/2 cups buttermilk in place of the water and buttermilk powder.
