I have made buttermilk pancakes for years and you always need at least a 1/2 tsp of BPwd added in this recipe. It interacts with the buttermilk to create small bubbles of carbon dioxide, which lighten your pancake batter. Once you mix it be ready to cook them immediately because that bubbling will subside. :)
