My whole house got smokey when I made these. They tasted great, and I'd like to make them again, but how can I avoid the smoke alarm going off next time? You may have some old oil or food pieces in your oven. When you turn the oven temperature up high, your kitchen can fill with smoke. I would try giving your oven a thorough cleaning and if you have an aghast fan turn it on.
