The easiest way to even out a browning issue such as this is simply move your pan up a rack or two in your oven. There are lots of reasons that your oven might be over browning on the bottom so don't feel like you have to keep them in the middle if it isn't working for you. Move your buns so they brown the way you want them to Susan, and forget about what other bakers do! But be sure to also look for hot spots as you move them closer to the top heating element.
