Donna, perhaps your mother-in-law used shortening rather than butter? She may also have baked the cookies for just a bit longer or at a higher temp (home ovens do tend to vary). When the sugar used to coat the cookies is applied to very warm cookies, it does tend to melt and ultimately soften the cookies, so it's also possible that waiting just a bit longer to roll them might help.
