If someone has had "Belgian waffles" on a breakfast buffet that were made with regular pancake/waffle mix, they wouldn't expect as much yeasty flavor as this recipe has if you include syrup and let it rise overnight. They just know they liked the thick waffles and got a Belgian-style waffle iron so they looked for a Belgian waffle recipe. It didn't taste like what they expected because they didn't know you can make baking powder waffles in a Belgian-style waffle iron.
I had a friend who was upset that I served yeast-raised waffles for brunch and kept making jokes like "Don't they have baking powder in Belgium?" He hasn't been invited back.
