Hi Robert - It sounds like the dough consistency may have been heavy and dense rather then soft and smooth even somewhat sticky. If the dough is too heavy it will not rise well which is what you experienced. It may be that you are measuring a heavy cup of flour. For better results please take a look on our site for a tutorial on Measuring Flour. If the dough still seems on the heavy side add some extra liquid by a teaspoon at a time as the dough comes together. We hope you will try again! Elisabeth@KAF
