I see this entry was from 2010, so I was hoping for any updates on it. I make kolače, too and am curious what you found. Like your lebkuchen story, I get 101 stories of family kolače, but people forget it was only 100 years ago that the entire area was the Austro-Hungarian empire, and the recipe changed from village to village. (They joke that you could tell what village you were in by ordering kolače!) Some Hungarians call Poppy seed rolls kolače. Some call rugelach or hamentaschen, kolače. It's all over the map.
