Thank you for this article! I just tried to double a cookie recipe that I made the other day in preparation for the holidays and only put 1/2 the butter I was supposed to. I just stared at it for a long time knowing something wasn't right. It took awhile for my tired brain to understand what I did wrong. I added the additional butter (so relieved I actually had enough) and it immediately started to look more familiar. I am chilling it overnight, as is called for anyway, so hopefully it'll be okay. Your post gives me hope! That last picture of the chocolate cake, refrigerator mess made my day. :)
