I've made popovers in gas ovens in the past, without problems. I wonder if their oven setting might be off - you can't rely on just setting an oven's temperature, then assuming it's really at that temperature; it's really important that you stick an oven thermometer in there to double check. The chief reason popovers don't pop is too low an oven temperature (or too thick a batter; did you perhaps add a bit too much flour?), so see if you can check the oven's temperature next time, OK?
