Hi Sara! Weighing the flour will definitely help, as it sounds like there was too much in there. Usually, the dough will be more of a sticky batter than a dough, so we have a feeling the lack of moisture was the main reason it didn't rise. Give it a go by weight and we think you'll be much happier with the results! You can also lower the sugar if you want to, or maybe change it to honey so the yeast still has its yummy food, but it'll give you a more complex flavor. Annabelle@KAF
