It can look paste like and it can look grainy, similar to sand. This all depends how soft your butter is so not to worry. The outcome will be the same. I believe MaryJane used 8" pans for this recipe. Be sure your ingredients are room temperature (butter, eggs and milk). That will help to create a nice emulsion for the optimum rise.
