I think maybe a better explanation of the pronunciation would be more like: pitz-ELL-eh. In Italian, when there's a double consonant, we give it a little bounce. The ending is not a y sound, not silent either, it's an "eh". And you can carry that idea forward to things like farfalle pasta, etc.
