We'd love to help, Val. Essentially, this more traditional style uses a simple mix of flour and water to achieve that classic, more yellow, cross. Give this a try: whisk together 1/2 cup (75g) of All-Purpose flour with 5 tablespoons of water until it is perfectly smooth. Then, pipe that slowly onto your buns just before you bake. That should provide the classic cross, without adding any additional flavors. We hope that helps, and wish you a very happy baking!
