For religious reasons I can not use espresso powder, would it really hurt it if I didn't use it? I have made brownies from scratch and never used it and it taste fine. Of course, Kimberly, leave it out. Espresso heightens the flavor of the chocolate, but doesn't affect the brownies' texture in any way. PJH
