Instead of that grocery store stuff that comes in the boxes (ICKKKK!!) you can make your own lard very easily. See Rick Bayless's recipe at http://www.fronterakitchens.com/cooking/techniques/cookingtech_porklard.html I use homemade lard for pie crusts. It works very well and makes a nice flaky crust. I think it would wonderful in the Cuban Bread.
