Hi Sharon, I suspect maybe your oven isn't fully preheated at the beginning of your cookie-baking, since cookies need to bake relatively fast and hot in order to crack properly. The cracks result from the outer shell setting before the moist interior. Rolling the dough balls in sugar also helps make the cracks happen. Try preheating your oven for a full half hour before baking, and doublecheck that you're oven is reading accurately by using an oven thermometer. You may also find that the oven temperature dips a bit when you're rotating pans in and out, so be sure that your oven is back up to temperature before baking the next round of cookies.
