Barbara, I am so glad to hear your views on discard. I, too, just use my starter then feed what remains and place in the refrigerator. I have never had any problems with the performance of my starter. Furthermore, I just eyeball the water and flour additions when I feed the starter. I know most are gasping at this point, but everything I have baked has turned out nicely.
