I have always liked Jonathan apples but could not find them in the Chicago area this year. I have never seen Northern Spy apples here but remember my mom talking about them years ago, and the only ones I see for baking are Granny Smith and McIntosh and the McIntosh get mushy. The eating apples that are good to eat do not cook up well. It is a dilemma for me. I am too elderly to walk around an apple orchard and cannot afford the stores like Whole Foods, Fresh Market, etc.
