If the range is 45 - 50 minutes, begin to check at 35-38 minutes. Give the pan a little shake. That should tell you pretty quickly where you (the pie!) are and where you need to go. Feel free to stick the thermometer in at this point (or any point) if you are unsure. As Gwen states, the filling will still be a little jiggly even with a reading of 175 degrees F. Good luck!
