My mother used an oblong sandwich grill which could be switched out to a waffle iron. She closed the top & it smushed it right down, but still tasted great. She very often cut the sandwich in half, poured tomato soup over it & called it rum-tum-ditty. Also at a restaurant in Allegany, NY (home of St. Bonaventure University), you could come in through the kitchen if you parked in the back, and they served grilled cheese on their own thick-cut bread. Fantastic & they only charged $1! I think many students grabbed up that specialty.
