I live and grew up near a large Mexican community here in Chicago- Little Village. The Mexican American cooks there made the cake with cajeta- a carmelized goat's milk that is also condensed. I think the result is more delicious than with only cow's milk products. In bakeries there I've seen this made with a layer of flan and huge strawberries in fans decorate the top of it all! A coworker bought this for my birthday one year and I couldn't stop hugging her for it! ;-)) That one was made at a bakery and was the most delicious version I've had yet. Please try it if you can find it.
