Well, there is another way to look at it. At 453g per 3.99 that works out to .008/g for store bought with their salt and whatever else their "proprietary receipe" has in it. But, taking a qt of heavy cream at 5.49, you get (at least by my last few batches) about 335 grams of butter (plus un-fermented buttermilk for other things) that works out to about .016/g so realistically you're only paying an additional .008 cents for your homemade - you know what's in it - butter, plus (and I haven't weighed it) a good amount of buttermilk to use in other receipes, or to make plant fungicide, etc. and the buttermilk can be frozen for later use, as can the butter.
on top of all that, you can season it anyway YOU want, you're not beholden to the factory made stuff. So if you have the time, and it only takes about 15 min from start to clean-up.
Personally just that little bit of peace of mind knowing it's fresh, it's clean, etc. is worth that $1.20 difference :)
