We're glad to hear about your successful bake, Katie! The shiny top comes from the melting of the sugar and butter together, you want the mixture to be glossy and the sugar to be mostly dissolved. I find it works best to melt the butter almost completely and then add the sugar, stirring the butter and sugar over very low heat to gently melt the sugar and bring the mixture up to temperature (about 110°F to 120°F).
