I've used this method for a while now, when making sticky buns and cinnamon rolls. It's allowed me to finally get the texture and size that I've been looking for, but I found that both water and milk produced somewhat bland results. I switched to buttermilk, and the rolls came out much, much better.
I've considered enhancing the liquid with some sort of flavor (tea, rum, coffee, etc.) but I haven't had a chance to try that yet.
