Hi Tony, sorry for the delay in responding to your question! A dark color on top of your starter, even with darker spots, is probably fine. As long as you're not seeing mold or a pink or orange tinge, I would pour/scoop off the darker portion, save some of the healthier-looking starter below, clean your container well with very hot water (boiling, if possible) and then air dry. Feed twice daily at room temperature until the starter is rising well and has a pleasant aroma. I hope this helps! Let us know how it goes.
