Hi Meredith, I would clean your container and utensils well with very hot (boiling, if possible) water before you begin again. You may also want to consider an alternative feeding plan suggested by microbiologist, Debra Wink, that uses a little less flour and may get you off to a better start. Check out her Pineapple Juice Solution recipe here. It's also fine to cover your starter tightly with plastic wrap. The reason we say to "cover loosely" is because fermentation gases can build up in a tightly lidded container and cause the lid to pop off. Plastic wrap will flex, so this won't be and issue, and your starter may benefit from the added protection. I hope this helps! Let us know how it goes.
