All the while I was preheating my lower oven to 500 degrees, then baking a loaf of bread at 450 degrees my starter was in the upper oven just above it. The upper oven was not so hat that I could not grab the jar out of it barehanded but it was still very, very warm. I was too startled to take it's temperature, alas. I fear that I have killed my starter, as it looked like wet sand when I discovered it. Should I be making a new starter? I'm feeding the "wet sand" starter but I'm not optimistic.
