Hi John, it's true that the starter can smell pretty rank at some points during the creation process, so I wouldn't let this deter you! The starter is busy weeding out unfriendly bacteria and setting up a balanced ecosystem between the wild yeast and friendly bacteria. This can take some time, but it sounds like your starter is doing what it's supposed to be doing, so I would continue on with confidence.
