Hi, unexpected tears suggest that you are not scoring deeply enough. Try at least one 1/4-inch deep, cross-loaf score, with lighter decorative scores elsewhere as you like. The deeper score makes sure steam escapes where you want it to rather than tearing through unexpected areas. Good luck!
