This has become one of my go-to favorites - I have to admit that I cheated: I used a yellow/white cake mix for the cake part using the 5 egg yolks in the cake and the rest is as in the recipe. It works perfectly, making this cake super quick and easy -and it looks so impressive. I've used strawberries, blueberries, raspberries - and a combination of all of the berries... bananas and even canned peaches. A real crowd pleaser. One more thing, I make the cake rectangular by making it in a sheet pan, then cutting it in half and putting one side over the other. Before baking, I sometimes manipulate the meringue so that the sides are slightly higher, so that there's a slight bowl effect. I can add even more delicious filling and it doesn't fall out until it's cut.
