My most favorite pie apple is the Gravenstein. It is an heirloom variety and is not very pretty (greenish brown). Our local orchard used to have them. When the trees got to old, they replaced them with newer varieties of apples. I have tried to find them at other orchards, but it's a type of apple that is not pretty at all and there really is no demand for it. I try to use Northern Spys when I can find them.
