In the fall, my family would pick apples from our neighbors' trees and make pies, crisps, applesauce, & apple butter from them. No idea what variety they are (likely some odd mix with wild apples that used to grow in the area), but they're amazing for all of the above. Sweetly tangy and apple-y, they keep their shape, but are soft when sliced and baked in pies, and they make amazing (usually completely unsweetened or only lightly sweetened) applesauce and apple butter. Yum! Love the tastes of fall!
