Hi Diane, the French Sourdough Starter is a dry starter that can be used to create a starter for use in a recipe, but it isn't meant to be continually fed and maintained. Here's the bread recipe that calls for the French Sourdough Starter. A homemade starter is created with flour and water and typically takes about 10 days to develop a mature sourdough starter. You can also purchase a fresh starter from us. Because this starter is already mature, it only takes a few days to get it up and ready for baking, and it comes with instructions for feeding and maintaining.
