Thank you so much for describing your mom's Depression Era cooking roots. That is precisely how my mother approached the kitchen herself. She was more interested in teaching piano and leading Girl Scouts and church groups than rattling around a kitchen to feed four children on a tight budget. Her own mother was in such poor health during the Depression that she didn't teach my mom how to cook at all. Then my mom had to try to cook in a tiny trailer for newlyweds while there was a war going on. Your description is sympathetic and understanding and I appreciate it. And like your mom, my mother had a couple things she cooked well: lemon meringue pie and scalloped potatoes. That hand-written recipe card is simply precious and so like what I inherited some twenty years ago. Thanks for striking this chord for me!
