Hi, Andrea! If you don't need much starter for your recipe, you will discard before feeding, so that your starter never grows any heavier than 12 ounces. If you need more than 6 ounces (170 grams) of starter for your recipe, though, you'll want to add the same volume as your larger starter until you have the amount needed for your recipe, plus 4 ounces to maintain in your starter container after you bake.
