I've had a batch of starter going for about 5 months, and I was keeping it on my counter. Then I realized that I was only baking with it about once a week, which meant that every week I threw out about 7 lbs of starter, used 3 1/2 lbs of flour just for feeding it, and getting only 2 loaves of bread out of the bargain. So I decided to put it in the fridge last Thursday. Since then, I've felt like I have abandoned my baby and the starter is heartbroken, wondering what it did to make me suddenly stop doting on it and send it to a frigid prison. Is that weird? I mean, I know it's ridiculous, because yeast and bacteria aren't capable of feeling neglected, but is it WEIRD?
