Gayle, in order to have enough room for the post-feeding growth of your starter, we'd recommend using a non-reactive container that can hold at least one quart. While the rye or whole wheat used at first helps to boost your starter's activity, it contributes fairly little in the way of flavor by the time you get to using your starter. By then, it will have been fed with All-Purpose Flour 10 times or so (on average), and very little of the original build is left in what gets used in baking. Mollie@KAF
