Ah, Bonnie, too bad! What you experienced is completely normal. Next time, just stir that layer on the top back into the starter; it's mostly alcohol. If you're uncomfortable with that for any reason, drain it off; your starter is still good. Sourdough starter will last for years in the fridge so long as you feed it regularly (every week if possible, or at least every few weeks); even when not fed regularly, it can still usually be saved, unless it's acquired a pinkish hue; or is just so far gone that it's dried up and very dark in color.
