Jan, it's difficult to say what went wrong with your starter without a bit more information. Some factors that might cause your starter to fail are: excessive heat (140 degrees or higher), exposure to chlorine or other chemicals in dish soap or tap water. That being said, these are hardy creatures and are pretty difficult to kill. Some factors that might cause your starter to slow down or not act very lively: very cool temperatures (under 50 degrees), too stiff consistency, or a crusty skin on top.
