Ed, it sounds like you may have inadvertently added too much flour or not enough water and this changed the consistency of your starter. A thicker starter will have a harder time rising, and will not look as active. I would recommend continuing to feed it twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening, until your starter returns to its vibrant self. If you happen to have a scale, saving 4 ounces of starter and feeding it 4 ounces of water and 4 ounces of flour will give you the most accurate and consistent results.
