!! Growing up, birthday cakes were always homemade, and frosted with my favorite, "buttercream"...until in college I tried to make my own and found recipe after recipe of what you call American-style here. I hate that stuff - too sweet, and the texture was all wrong. And I knew that powdered sugar was not a major player, but I couldn't remember anything beyond that. Presumably my mom made one of the other versions here. Now I just need to bake some cakes and experiment til I figure it out... You're in for a fun journey, Talia.
