I know this is an older post, but I was scanning for another issue and I had to offer my experience. I've been using serrated grapefruit spoons to scoop out my starter. They're a bit on the small side but I use two together and they cut through stringy starter better than regular spoons and work well also for scraping seeds out of pumpkin and butternut squash. I've seen serrated culinary scoops online and those might be better for scooping out larger quantities.
