Your essay brought back wonderful memories of my Italian-Irish husband and my French-Dutch self going shopping, discussing holiday celebrations and the like! My late, Italian born father-in-law was always asking me to make Scalli. Although I was able to make all of his other favorites, I was never able to find the recipe for Scalli and my attempts at recreation never quite filled the bill.
